Fred Edwards was born in Bermondsly, London, England, on December 25, 1892, the son of Frederick Christopher Edwards and Margaret (Mary Ann) Edwards, of Walworth, London, England. Fred enlisted January 11, 1915, in Sarnia with the 1st Battalion. A bachelor at the time, he recorded his occupation as a sailor. He became a member of the Army, Canadian Infantry, Western Ontario Regiment, 1st Battalion, as a Private. On May 3, 1917, Fred Edwards would lose his while fighting in France, approximately one month after the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Fred Edwards would later be officially listed as, Previously reported wounded and missing, now for official purposes presumed to have died. Attack on Fresnoy. Twenty-seven year old Fred Edwards has no known grave. He is memorialized on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calasi, France. On the Sarnia cenotaph, his name is inscribed as F.W. Edwards.
